Individual tuning for Rally Renault Twingo RS 1.6 with SIM32 ECU

Renault Twingo 1.6 RS Rally ECU Tuning – Siemens SIM32

Rally-Focused ECU Calibration

We recently completed a performance-oriented ECU calibration for a Renault Twingo 1.6 RS rally car, equipped with the Siemens SIM32 ECU.

The goal was to remove unnecessary electronic limitations and improve throttle response, torque delivery, engine behavior, and overall performance for competitive rally use.

Removing Load Limitations

One of the main areas we addressed was the ECU's load limitation strategy.

The original calibration contains limits that can prevent the engine from fully reaching the power it is mechanically capable of producing. We adjusted these limitations to allow the engine to operate closer to its available maximum performance.

More Aggressive Ignition Timing

We optimized the ignition timing using a more aggressive MBT (Maximum Brake Torque) approach.

The objective was to bring ignition advance closer to the point where the engine produces its best torque while keeping the calibration suitable for the intended rally application.

Full-Load Fueling

For high-load operation, the calibration uses an approximate lambda target of 0.88.

The richer full-load mixture is intended to support performance and combustion-temperature management when the engine is being operated hard.

Increased RPM Limit

The engine RPM limit was also recalibrated to better suit the rally application.

The objective was to give the driver a wider usable operating range and make better use of the engine's available power band, rather than having the ECU intervene too early.

The revised RPM strategy was calibrated with the engine's mechanical limitations and intended competition use in mind.

Left-Foot Braking

A particularly useful feature for rally driving is left-foot braking.

We enabled the strategy that allows the driver to apply the brake and throttle simultaneously without the ECU unnecessarily cutting engine power.

This is important in rally because drivers frequently use left-foot braking while maintaining throttle input. Preserving the driver's throttle command gives more predictable and immediate control of the car during corner entry, weight transfer, and throttle modulation.

Anti-Jerk Function Disabled

Another important change was disabling the ECU's anti-jerk function.

During our testing, we found that the SIM32 ECU uses this strategy during certain throttle-opening and throttle-closing events to smooth torque delivery.

While this is useful for normal road driving, a rally car requires a different response.

The driver needs an immediate reaction to throttle inputs, especially during rapid throttle transitions and corrections. Removing this intervention gives the engine a sharper and more direct response.

Final Performance

With the original catalytic converter still installed, the tuned Twingo 1.6 RS produced:

146 hp and 179 Nm

The result is a calibration focused not only on peak power, but also on response, usable torque, RPM range, and driver control.

For a competition car, the objective isn't simply to chase a bigger dyno number. Throttle response, predictable torque delivery, appropriate RPM limits, and minimizing unwanted ECU intervention can be just as important as peak horsepower.

This Siemens SIM32 calibration was developed with exactly that philosophy in mind:

More direct driver control. Faster engine response. Wider usable RPM range. Maximum usable performance from the naturally aspirated 1.6 RS engine.
